Bariloche Moto Tours offers a wide variety of short tours around our beautiful home area. These excursions can range from one day to a week. They are designed to make the most out of your stay in our home town. Your personal guide will be happy to show you a few of our secret places.
The tours described hereafter are only examples of what's available. We would be happy to design a tailor-made trip for you.
Excursion 1 > Lago Steffen, El Bolsón and Lago Puelo Distance 310 km
Some 60km to the south of Bariloche, we leave Route 40 and take a dirt track due west for 10km to Lake Steffen. Although a popular place for rafting and fishing, Lake Steffen is otherwise little-visited, lying in its steep wooded valley and provides a peaceful place to stop on our tour.
We return to the main road and continue south to El Bolsón, located just below the 42nd Parallel. It’s renowned for its crafts fair as well as particularly good home-brewed beers! 19km further south, we reach Lake Puelo National Park, just over into Chubut Province and where we will have our picnic lunch on the lake shore.
On our return to El Bolsón, we will have time to ride up the steep dirt track to the Piltriquitrón Mountain to enjoy the impressive view to the south. Returning to the village, we take the Mallín Ahogado Circuit to rejoin the Route 40 north to Bariloche.
Excursion 3 > Circuito Chico Distance 65 km
The popular Circuito Chico provides breathtaking views of the Nahuel Huapi Lake with its wooded islands and peninsulas. From Llao Llao with its imposing hotel and Puerto Pañuelo we visit the pretty beach of Villa Tacul, accessed from the paved road by a dirt track.
There is a chance also to do a short forest walk to visit the Hidden Lake. Continuing along the circuit we ride towards Colonia Suiza, originally settled by Swiss immigrants, and a great place to stop and sample the curanto, selected meats and vegetables cooked in the ground. We will also visit the Cerro Catedral, Argentina’s premier ski resort, characterised by its spiky ganite peaks.
Excursion 5 > Seven Lakes Route to
San Martín de los Andes or Junín de los Andes Distance 340km or 460km
An alternative, longer route to the Circuito Grande, takes us to the picturesque resort of San Martín de los Andes along the Seven Lakes Route.
The return trip offers two possibilities: via Paso Córdoba on a stone road or via Junín de los Andes and the paved Route 40 from la Rinconada. The latter route passes close to a viewing point from which condors can be seen flying in their natural habitat.
Excursion 2 > Mount Tronador and the Alerces Waterfall Distance 210 km
No visit to Bariloche would be complete without a visit to Mount Tronador, located on the Chilean border deep in the Nahuel Huapi National Park. Access to the park is 35km to the south of Bariloche where we ride west along dirt tracks, skirting the southern shores of Lake Mascardi from where you will enjoy spectacular views.
Standing at an impressive 3554m, Mount Tronador is an extinct volcano whose glaciers and waterfalls dominate the surrounding area.
Its black moraine is an unusual feature of the Tronador’s glacial past and the source of the River Manso, whose turquoise water leads us south to visit the Alerces Waterfall before our return trip to Bariloche.
Excursion 4 > Circuito Grande
Distance 245 km
From Bariloche we head north around the Nahuel Huapi Lake to Villa La Angostura where a short side-trip can be organised to visit the Arrayanes Wood – a unique forest of 600 year-old myrtle trees, before continuing north along on the Seven Lakes Route towards San Martín de los Andes. After about 25km of unpaved road we turn east towards Lake Traful which will be our stopover place for lunch.
The ride is challenging as the road is mostly dirt track but you’ll enjoy stunning views of the lakes as we pass through forested mountain valleys. At Confluencia we rejoin the main Route 40 south to return to Bariloche, passing the extraordinary rock formations of the Enchanted Valley along the banks of the River Limay.
According to Mapuche legend, these Patagonian lakes were created from the tears shed by the heartbroken Moon and even today, the Moon’s Mother still weeps for her daughter so continuing to fill the mountain rivers and lakes with crystalline water.
